You have been imprisoned at Alcatraz for twenty-one years by being accused falsely for committing murder. You have lived there most of your life and the only good food you can remember is the rotten slabs of meat and stale crunches of bread. One day, you decide you have enough; you are going to attempt a jailbreak.

Many have tried before, you remember. Only a few got off the island. You remember your ancestor, Errol Roy, who had successfully managed to break out, but he is long dead. However, you remember your mother had given old parchments that she claimed once belonged to Roy, who had passed it to his friend Clarence Morris before the jailbreak. Maybe that can give you clues.

You look at Alcatraz’s security, and you find out that there is a five-numbered lock that connects to a secret passageway to break out of your cell. Then, to get out of the cell rooms, you must get past a door lock in the door, and to swim off Alcatraz, you must find the safety boats stored within the island, all while not alerting the guards. However, you realize that you only have free time, so not to be seen, for a very short time. Guards visit every hour, so there’s only an hour the guards will leave you alone so that you can try to break out. You’re sure that you can handle the adventurous parts, but can you decode the messages that your ancestor left for you? He has left them in complicated ciphers that you do not understand, in case they were passed into the wrong hands. That is the hard part. Can you do it?

Some clues you have are:

  1. Vestine is the Head Guard, and lives on the edge of Alcatraz
  2. Remember: “The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.”
  3. All are ciphers
Will you be able to find your way out with your ancestor’s help? Good luck!
