Here is a free DIY escape room game idea that we created for you to try at home. This one is pretty easy, targeted for kids 5-13. The setting is in Egypt in an ancient pyramid. You can also decorate your house with Egyptian themed object, such as mummies, scarabs, sarcophagi, shabti, crocodiles, and cat images. You can use this an an opportunity to teach something about Egypt as a bonus. I hope that you enjoy it.
You are your fellow Egyptologists have made an incredible discovery! You have discovered a new step pyramid in the desert in Saqqara, Egypt. You knock on a stone wall and find that it sounds hollow behind. Carefully, removing the stone blocks on the wall one-by-one, you discover a hidden passage behind the wall. You lead the way by crawling into the tunnel on your hands and knees, lighting the way only with a flashlight. To your surprise, the passage leads to a large room.
You and your colleagues are able to stand up now. Scanning the room with your flashlight, you see various shabti statues of crocodiles, cats, and small people.
You also find large stone statues of Horus and Osiris, and canopic jars with various body organs inside (yuck!). In the center of the room, there is a large stone rectangular object. With the help of your friends, you are able to use a bar to pry open the lid of the stone structure. You spy the yellow glint of solid gold inside the stone box. There is not one, but two sarcophagi inside.
You have made a discovery of a lifetime. You have found a pristine mummy room with unopened sarcophagi and treasures beyond imagination. However, after opening up a sarcophagus cover, you hear the thunder of rocks falling. You have accidentally triggered a booby trap that causes the stones in the entrance to collapse. You cannot go out the way you came. Not only that, there is no air ventilation in the room. You estimate that there is only 40 minutes worth of oxygen left for your group.
Is this the end? Your fellow Egyptologist points out that in addition to the Book of the Dead, there are some additional hieroglyphic inscriptions on the wall you have not seen before. With some effort, you are able to decode hieroglyphics on the wall to, “The exit will reveal itself only to the worthy” But first you must solve the puzzles to find the right codes and to unlock the second exit. Can you find your way out?
Can you decode the message with your knowledge of hieroglyphics? Additionally, there is a metal box with what you recognize as the 10 numbers in ancient hieroglyphics. You divine that you can push the numbers in the correct order to open the puzzle box. Perhaps if you can figure out the code, there is something inside that can help you get out.
You can download the Egyptian Escape the Pyramid puzzles for FREE (gratis) in the Escape Room Shop and your enjoyment at your escape room party!
Ambience is important. I printed out a bunch of Egyptian related pictures and took some game pieces to decorate the room. I have uploaded some of these images.
